Divisional Dean's Letter

Ariela Sofer, Divisional Dean

Welcome to the Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University.

Engineering has never been more relevant or more necessary than it is in today’s world. From developing sustainable solutions, creating new medical technologies, fighting climate change, or designing technologies for protecting and improving the wellbeing of people, engineers are leaders in advancing society.

The Volgenau School of Engineering offers a relevant array of programs that equip students with deep technical knowledge, combined with a broad understanding of the environmental and societal contexts of their engineering solutions.   Through our programs, our students develop as critical thinkers and innovators, with the strong collaboration skills and global perspective that prepare them to solve the complex engineering problems of the future.

We have a world-class faculty whose cutting-edge research pushes the envelope of knowledge, whether in robotics, smart cities, cybersecurity, biomedical devices or protecting our infrastructure.    We pride ourselves on our strong interdisciplinary research activities that involve faculty and students at all levels. We are located in the heart of the East Coast's most active tech corridor, and our strong connections to industry and government strongly inform our research and educational programs.  We benefit also from being one of the nation’s most diverse universities.

Volgenau is ranked in the top 100 engineering schools by U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools, and several of our programs have earned top honors. Students who graduate from our school can expect to enjoy rewarding careers with significant earning potential and opportunities for high-impact contributions in a range of sectors, including healthcare, cybersecurity, manufacturing, business, government, and more.

Take a look at our site, learn about our school, come and visit. We think you will be impressed.

The Future of Engineering is Here!
